Nets of shapes

Today we were learning about nets of shapes. A net of a shape is what the shape looks like when you open the shape up.

We used nets of shapes to make 3D shapes like cubes, cuboids and pyramids.

This morning we did the #mannequinchallenge.

Most of us have NEVER done this before so it was a bit confusing and a weird experience.

Symmetry

Today we learnt about symmetry.

Symmetry is where a shape or object is mirrored or the two parts are the same.

We used lots of different shapes and we cut the out and folded them in half (vertically and horizontally) to see if the two sides were the same. 

Then we sorted the shapes into categories - vertically symmetrical, horizontally symmetrical, and asymmetrical. We had to agree or disagree with the other groups if we thought that shape was vertically symmetrical, horizontally symmetrical or it wasn't symmetrical at all. 

Asymmetrical means when it isn't symmetrical, the two parts are not the same. 

President Trump

Today we talked about President Trump and the elections that happened this week.

We used this DLO to research Clinton, Trump and the election. 

Then we talked about everything we learnt about the two people - Clinton and Trump.

Then, we went away and wrote about our opinion. Some people thought they would vote for Trump, and some people thought they would vote for Clinton.

Google Drawings - tips and tricks!

Today Miss Ashley showed us lots of tips and tricks for using Google Drawings to make our pictures look amazing. We learnt about 

-CROPPING TOOL (this lets you cut part of the picture out)

-RESIZING (making a picture smaller or bigger)

-MASKING (making a picture fit inside a shape like a circle or heart)

-RED MARKER LINES (so the picture is in the middle of the page)

-PNG FILES (drag and drop) (We have to use PNG so they don't have ugly backgrounds, PNG has no background)

-GROUPING (This lets you kind of 'glue' two pictures together to make one picture)

-TEXT (rotating text)

Miss Ashley showed us how to build layers into our drawing, sending some of the images behind or in front of the others so it looks nice. We practiced lots of how to find good PNG images that we can layer together to create a very effective image.

Joshua - great PNG finding of the balloons and fire works. (The bunting and rugby ball aren't PNGs, see how they have funny white backgrounds)

Mojtaba - Great layering of his face on top of the circle of roses.

Syraiah-Lee - Amazing use of PNG's to create the ring around your face and how you made it look like you are wearing a crown! 

Stanley - Again great use of PNGs to give yourself bunny ears.

Wesley - Good use of confetti, bunting and balloon PNGs in the left corner,.

We still need practice finding PNG images because sometimes it says they are and they aren't, so some of us have weird backgrounds on our images, but we will get better and better the more we practice. 

We are very proud of ourselves for the new skills we have learnt today.

Our Manaiakalani Film Festival movie!

This year, we decided to do a zumba movie. When we were filming this, we were doing zumba as a brain break or energiser activity all the time. 

We work hard, and we play hard too! We love to have a bit of fun in the classroom.

We learnt all the moves then we performed them all around our school. 

We hope you enjoy our movie and have a bit of fun with us!

Using powerful connectives

We in Room 6 have been learning to use powerful connectives like - although, however, such as, especially,  and many more to speak on a topic. See how we tried to form sentences using our connectives.

New words learnt through our study about safety of theme Parks

Say It - Roller Coasters

We did a Say it activity about the safety of roller coasters. We did this activity after reading several texts about theme parks - how they can be dangerous, what happens to our body when we are on a roller coaster, how they are a place of amusement etc. Check out what Room 6 students have to say...

This is what one of my students taught me to do. They had learnt it from Miss Ashley when I was not in class. Later Timothy taught me and helped the rest of the class to make word clouds. I am so proud of you Timothy!  Here is the one that I made...

Falakika's opinion about roller coasters

My Opinions About Roller Coasters

After reading the articles that told about the incidents that have happened at theme parks, I would never ride on a roller coaster because I do not want to die or get injured seriously. When you are injured seriously you could still die. But sometimes I could change my mind if they have a sign that says it has been checked recently and regularly. I have to make sure that it is safe for me and other families to go on. I also feel sad about the people who died at Dreamworld and the 92,000 children who have been injured in the past 20 years. It is important to read lots about theme parks to get correct information. I think it is safe to go on slower rides but can be very dangerous to go on roller coasters.

Celebrations (Week 2!)

To continue with our Celebrations inquiry, we talked about celebrating ourselves..

Celebrating ourselves I hear you say... what???

Yes, we are worth celebrating!

We are smart, beautiful, hard-working students and deserve to be acknowledged.

On Tuesday, we brainstormed words that describe people...

We took photos of ourselves like this...

On Wednesday,  we printed the photos, cut out our heads and glued them onto a piece of paper.

We laid them out all around the classroom and took turns at each persons paper, thinking hard and writing something nice about that person.. something worth celebrating!

It was so nice to see what other people thought about us. A lot of kids said things like 'I don't think I am (.....) but somebody said I am.. maybe I am (.....)?', 'I'm surprised that somebody wrote I am (.....)', 'I'm happy that somebody wrote I am (.....) because I have been trying very hard at that'.

The main point of this activity was for all of us to realise they have something about them that is worth celebrating! 

Term 4 Kiwisport (Week 2)

This week we started Kiwisport again - this term we are learning about basketball.

Lots of us love playing basketball, so we are excited to learn tips and tricks to play better (and to play properly!).

We started this term by revisiting our school values. We made sure that we remembered and reflected on how we used our values during the day. At the end of the day this is what Room 6 students had to share...

Celebrations! (Week 1)

This week we talked about things that we celebrate. This was the beginning of our inquiry unit into 'Celebrating Me'.

During the week, we brainstormed all the celebrations we know about..

Next, we had to chose one we thought we knew the most about. We had to show/explain what we know about it. We could draw, write, anything.

Next, we had to explain about our celebration.
