Tuakana Teina!

Today was Tuakana Teina day, where we spent the day with out buddy class. 

We spent all day building positive relationships with our buddies and getting lots of learning done. They even helped us write our first draft of our 'all about me' text, which we will put on our blogs when we get them. At the end of the day, our buddy class, some year 7 and 8 students from room 10, took us out to play soccer. 

We wanted to practice listening to the rules, playing as a team and being fair. We also wanted to have a bit of fun!

Thank you to Ameila, who is one of our school leaders, for running and refereeing our soccer game!

Milan - Fun Picnic Day

I can do this. I need someone to go first! Shouted Miss Manuyag. Everyone put their hands up. Miss Manuyag picked the one who was at the front of the line. He ran as fast as he could, it was cool. Then it was Miss Manuyag's turn and she ran up with a tremendous slip. It was a blast! I loved the fun day!

Falakika - Fun Picnic Day!

"Its so exciting!" shouted Hope L from the other side of the bumble bee hunt. There was such a huge line to the slide down the watery slippery wet slide. I was looking after Mrs Manyanne's baby dog. It was fun looking after Kalalila the whole time, I only went on the bouncey castle once then thats when I started looking after Kalila. When myself and Kalila went to where our bags were, there was Stanley's aunty with a big black dog that was trying to come to me and Kalila. Kalila was trying to run to it and bark at the same time. I heard from Caleb that Mrs Manyann' went down the slide, but the first time she stopped then the second time she didn't stop. Mrs Maryanne got wet and Kalila is cute, small, fast and likes to jump. At the end of the lovely fun day we were all happy and some of us were exhausted.

Hope L - Fun Picnic Day

"This is so exciting!" shouted Alyssa from the other side of me and I screamed out loud and said, "this is so amazing!". Then Angel told me to go with her on the slide and then Angel was at the front of the line then she went to the slide then it was my turn to slide then I waited for the teacher to tell me to go. I got wet from the hose then I went at the back of the line then Angel said I could go at the back of her then we went to the sand and we were looking for some bees then w went to the big cool bouncy castle and then she went back to the awesome slippery slide but I went to play the game called the amazing spongebob squeeze game. Then the cool fun day was finished and then the kids that got wet went to change in the toilets then the bell rang and we were still changing then when we were finished changing, we got out of the toilets and one of the boys told us that the bell went and then they all went outside and I went to get my lunch and my drink bottle and I went outisde and said goodbye to Alyssa and she said by to me. I went into the car and it was messy and dirty then we went home happy. We changed then played outside until my dad came home. Then it was getting darker then we need to go inside and eat then we went sleep and it was nice and warm.

Saia - Fun Picnic Day

I shouted out to my friends,  "It was a fun day!". We wen ton the water slide. It was cool because there was a bouncy castle and there was a water slide. Then we went on the bouncy castle.

Teamwork in the classroom!

This morning we read a new book and then had to do three different follow up activities.

Although we were focusing on our literacy skills, we also had an overall focus on teamwork for the day. These are the three things we had to do -

In our teams, we took turns contributing ideas for each activity, collaborating in one document to share responsibility for our learning.

We then presented one activity from each group to the rest of our class. 

This way an awesome way to integrate our school values and class treaty into our daily learning. We always strive to work together well, respect each other and each others ideas, and try our very best.

Bike Riding!

This week in Room 6 was a first for a lot of things - first Fruit in Schools, first Milk in schools, first bike riding session of the year, first syndicate assembly, etc. 

We had a lot of fun learning to put our helmets on properly when we went bike riding on Tuesday, and two students even started learning how to ride a bike for the first time!

We have started discussing the idea of drinking water instead of fizzy drinks and sugary drinks, and how they impact your body and mind. We also do meditation everyday after lunchtime to focus our minds and get ready for learning again.

WALT find describing words about a character in our story

This week we have been learning about adjectives (aka describing words). We have learnt what they are, how to find them in a text and how to use them to describe a particular character.

On Monday and Tuesday, we did an activity where we used keyword adjectives (e.g. red scales, tall hat, long pointy nose, long sharp claws) to create sentences to describe a character. We chose two characters from our story, Room on the Broom written by Julia Donaldson - the witch and the dragon.

We then created sentences linking similar keywords and created informative sentences about the character.

We created very interesting sentences such as...

The dragon was angry and frustrated because he couldn't eat the witch, so he was hungry.

The dragon stomps like a giant, roars like a lion and laughs like a hyena. (check out those similies!)

At the end we discussed with a buddy whether we thought we did achieve our WALT and our success criteria or not, because it is very important in room 6 that we are reflecting on our learning and are able to articulate it.

This is our class. We have 2 teachers and 21 students.

Class treaty

This is the class Treaty for Room 6. The koru patterns represent growth in learning. We promise to be a team and learn from our mistakes. We will respect each other and will try our best to achieve our goals.

Narrative writing

This week we have been writing about when we met a Gruffalo
Here is Alyssa's imaginative story.

When I met a Gruffalo

Once when I was strolling through the woods, I saw a giant Guffalo. It looked like a bear. It had orange eyes and they looked like fire. It had a black tongue that looked like a swirly snake. The giant Grufflao had purple prickles all over his back. It looked very grumpy and I was scared.

I looked straight into his eyes and screamed “ Help help! I am going to get eaten by a Gruffalo”. I thought quickly… And I called the animal control. I was so terrified that I shouted out loud and started to cry, but no one was there. The Gruffalo was following me in the woods.

The animal control came in five minutes and they got a big net. They grabbed the Gruffalo in the net and put him in a big truck. Then they took the Gruffalo to the zoo. Some time later I heard on the radio  that they have a new creature at the zoo and everyone went to the zoo to see ‘The Gruffalo’

Re'Al and Willie's Ocean Life Legend

We created legends based on a feature of a sea creature we were interested in.
This is Willie and Re'Al's legend about how the special connection between dolphins and humans began.

Why Dolphins Have Good Connections with Humans.

Long long  ago in the ancient island of Hawaii live an handsome boy named Taniwha. Taniwha  had a secret. He had a good connection with a dolphins.

One day while Taniwha and a dolphin were swimming where the sharks lived. While they were passing the sharks, one  shark woke up and tried to attack Taniwha for his prey. But the dolphin managed to whack the shark in the head. The shark was angry and ripped the dolphin’s tail off and disappeared with it!

The dolphin sacrificed his tail for Taniwha’s life.

Tangaroa is the God of the sea. He saw what happened and was proud of  the dolphin. He banished the shark and gave the dolphin another tail.

Since that day dolphins have always had good connection with humans.

Glowing Water in San Diego

Part of our reading learning is to use critical thinking skills to find deeper information. Scott read an article about how water on the coast of San Diego is glowing. He created a DeBono's thinking hats presentation to organise and share his understanding of the information he read.

FInding Information in the Text

Christina's reading group are learning to find information that show their understanding. They were asked to share who the characters are and where the story is set. This is the presentation that she created to record and share her learning.

Scott & Curtys King Crab Research

As part of our Tagata o le Moana (People of the Sea) Inquiry. Scott and Curtys used the inquiry model to research and present information about a sea creature of their choice.

Willie's Descriptive Writing

Willie Ngaia-Cummings produced this piece of writing in which he used adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and  simile to paint a picture AND set the tone (the feel) for his audience as well.

Kahlicia's DeBono's Analysis and Go-Animate Summary

We used deBono's thinking hats to find information about the inventor named Flint in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2. Some of the information was easy to find and some of it we had to think about because it was about how characters might feel.

Discoveries That Have Impacted Our Lives

This week, we put our questioning and research skills to the test by creating group research projects about discoveries and inventions that have impacted our lives. The students selected a discovery, discussed their prior knowledge, then dug deeper into that knowledge to create their own questions for learning. These presentations are the result of their efforts.
